Program Description

The Purchase College, SUNY three week study trip to China will focus on Confucianism and its influence on China’s history and contemporary world. Program participants will begin their trip in Beijing, site of the Forbidden City, The Temple of Heaven, and Tiananmen Square. Just outside the city the group will climb the Great Wall. In Xi’an, the Eastern terminal of the Silk Road, students will visit the Qin Dynasty terracotta warriors and explore the ancient city fortifications and gates.

The program will end in Shanghai, where students will visit important historic and contemporary districts, the Shanghai Museum, and the birthplace of the Communist Party. The group may also journey to Qufu, the city of Confucius’ birth. Along the way, program participants will visit Confucian temples/academies, popular shrines, museums, galleries, gardens and schools. Participants will be accommodated in hotels.

While seeing historic sites first hand and exploring China’s legacy and its modern transformation, program participants will delve into texts of the Confucian classics, examine and appreciate various views in the cultural debates on Confucianism, and try to develop a critical understanding of Confucianism’s influence in pre-modern times and its modern fate
