Program Description

Located between Nice and Cannes, with 25 km of sandy beaches and 300 sunny days a year, Antibes is one of the Côte d'Azur's star attractions and becomes the students’ home for four weeks of the program.

While in Antibes, students live with a French-speaking family, take French language class daily, and choose between two electives. Just as importantly, students immerse themselves in the life of this beautiful Mediterranean town surrounded by ancient fortified walls. There will be excursions offered to St. Paul-de-Vence (included), Nice and other Côte d'Azur towns. The program ends with five days of exploration in Paris, the City of Lights!

FOR SUMMER 2016: students will have the option to take one elective and will also take a French language class at their level. This year, the electives will include:

1) REPORTING THE REGION : JOU 3020 / 4 credits
Students explore the region to produce journalistic reports on the challenges facing a French family, the implications of a French political or social issue, and a travel piece. The goal is for students to write as a foreign correspondent, conveying the community's views, struggles, sights, and sensations to an audience back home. This course is open to all levels and majors and will be adapted according to the student’s familiarity with journalism.

2) FINE ART – LINE & SPACE: EXPLORING ANTIBES VIS 1710 / 4 credits.
This course will incorporate on-site drawing and ephemeral site-specific sculptures, using found as well as traditional materials. In this course students will explore the spaces that are Antibes, not just physical, but also the historical, political, and psychological space. Beginning with drawing we will explore these spaces, and later move into ephemeral street installations. We will make books as a way to compile and record our visual experiences and memories. In addition to visiting historical art and architecture, we will also visit Antibes contemporary art galleries. There will be an opportunity for some collaborative work within the elective course. This course is open to all levels and majors.
